Sustainably Collected Live Sand
Not many vendors offer diver collected sand. Why? Because collecting it is hard work.
We harvest live sand by hand on the ocean bottom where the current is flowing and tides a changing. This is a tedious job but well worth the effort. Our Live Sand is so full of goodies that it is literally harvested amongst flounders. Yes, flounders are very interested in sand collection.
TBS live sand is transported in natural sea water to the Icehouse. Once in the holding system the sand is kept in medium flow with moderate lighting. A couple giant hermit crabs patrol the sandy surface keeping it aerated.
Ocean harvested live sand is a big seller and moves quickly, so expect only the freshest grains in your order.
The recommended amount of live sand in a marine aquarium is 1 pound per gallon. This provides about an inch of depth.
Care for Hand Harvested Live Sand
- Basic care – Is provided by a clean-up crew of critters. Hermits, snails, starfish, cucumbers and shrimps will scavenge through it, scuttle across it and burrow in. This helps aerate the sand and move detritus out. Occasional vacuuming of small sections will keep detritus laden areas fresh.
- Functioning Aquarium Required– TBS Live Sand will arrive in seawater, carefully bagged, and held in an insulated box. This is a perishable product and requires life support provided by a working aquarium.
- Flow – Live Sand was harvested from a lease site many miles out in the Gulf of Mexico, where the water is flowing, and tides are changing. We recommend good water flow.
- Water Quality – Reverse Osmosis De-Ionized water is vital for your marine inhabitants. Use it to top-off evaporated water and use it when making your own saltwater at specific gravity 1.024-1.026.
