Pilumnus sayi – Gorilla Crab

Hairy crabs make great puffer and mantis snacks!

ID -

Red-brown-purple crabs covered in hair with white blotches, unequal sized dark tipped claws and three rows of conical spines. The gorilla crab has four walking legs, and its carapace can grow up to 2.5cm (1in), it will hide in rocks and piles of rubble.

Tips -

We try to remove all Gorilla crabs from our rocks before packaging. If you spy one, try setting bottle traps. If you can reach its rock lair, remove the rock while holding it over a bucket use a chopstick to prod the crab off/out of the rock. These crabs make great snacks for predator fish or can become sump dwellers.
