These tiny burs hide in live rock. They quickly grow into algae eating machines!
Medium black, olive or purple thick spines protruding from round dark body up to 7.5cm (3 in).
They are nocturnal and tend to be stationary during the day.
The purple spined urchin is an interesting clean-up crew option for mixed reefs, sps tanks and even fowlr tanks housing moderately aggressive fish. These nocturnal prickly creatures will scavenge live rock and aquarium glass eating algae, even coralline algae. They are known to demolish red turf algae. Provide them with a large aquarium and plenty of algae.
